First there was Woodstock, then there was Icestock! In Iceland, people welcome in the New Year with this annual music celebration.
In the style of Woodstock, the event features multiple artists playing playing music for multiple hours and for multiple people (we’re not talking Woodstock numbers though). Everything is run by volunteers and there are no auditions either. If you want to play, you’re in!
The idea was developed back in 1989 by three friends, Rick Campbell, David Sullivan, and Dane Terry. The first Icestock celebration welcomed in the 1990’s and the event has been going strong ever since.
5… 4… 3… 2… 1… Happy New Year!!! Did you know that in Italy, it is tradition to wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve? In a ritual that goes back to medieval times, it is believed the wearing red underwear as you welcome in the new year will bring you good luck throughout it.
It is interesting to note that while nowadays the color red is more often associated with love, passion, and happiness, there was a time when it was more associated with the devil, witchcraft, and blood.
