FACT OF THE DAY:  Disney’s animated version of Beauty and the Beast was released in 1991. It made over $400 million in box office sales. Did you know that Jackie Chan was in this version of the film? Well, sort of. The famed martial artist did the voice of the Beast in the Mandarin version of the film.  Not only did he do the voiceover work, but he also sang the songs.

FACT OF THE DAY:  What was the top worldwide grossing movie of 2017? The answer would be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This installment of the George Lucas franchise grossed $1,332,539,889.

Rounding out the Top 5 was:

  • Beauty and the Beast   ($1,263,521,126)
  • The Fate of the Furious   ($1,236,005,118)
  • Despicable Me 3   ($1,034,799,409)
  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle   ($961,937,040)

1st Animated Best Picture Nominee

Belle and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast

In 1992, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” became the first animated film to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Picture category. Since then, only “Up” in 2009 and “Toy Story 3” in 2010 have been able to earn a nomination for Best Picture.

Unfortunately, all three movies came up short in their bid to win the biggest award of the Oscar evening. Ten years later, in 2002, the Academy Awards introduced a separate category for Best Animated Feature.
