FACT OF THE DAY: Jurassic Park! Everyone’s favorite dinosaur movie from 1993. The film was full of visual and special sound effects. One special sound effect might not be what you were expecting. When the raptors were barking/screaming/communicating with each other, etc, what you were hearing were the mating calls of tortoises having sex.
FACT OF THE DAY: In 1994 Steven Spielberg won an Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture for his work with the movie Schindler’s List. The drama about the Holocaust won a total of 7 Oscars at the 66th Academy Awards ceremony. Spielberg took no pay for his work on this film saying it would be like taking “blood money”.
FACT OF THE DAY: It was 39 years ago today, August 15, 1979, that the critically acclaimed movie Apocalypse Now was released in theaters. The Francis Ford Copolla hit was based on the 1899 novella “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad.
The film starred Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper. Duvall received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role. Brando received top billing for this film yet his character only had 15 minutes of screen time.
FACT OF THE DAY: The movie Fight Club, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, was released in 1999. One of the more well-known quotes from this movie is, “The first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club.” Here is another little fact about this movie. Director David Fincher let it be known that there is a visible Starbucks cup in every scene in the movie. Next time you are watching this film, you have something else to look for now.
FACT OF THE DAY: Disney’s animated version of Beauty and the Beast was released in 1991. It made over $400 million in box office sales. Did you know that Jackie Chan was in this version of the film? Well, sort of. The famed martial artist did the voice of the Beast in the Mandarin version of the film. Not only did he do the voiceover work, but he also sang the songs.
FACT OF THE DAY: Animal House, the comedy classic film was released 40 years ago today, July 28, 1978! The movie, which was a spoof on the life of college fraternities, starred John Belushi, Tim Matheson, Peter Riegert, and also featured a very young Kevin Bacon. Four decades later and Animal House remains a well known part of pop culture.
FACT OF THE DAY: The Stars Wars empire has been around since 1977. The George Lucas created franchise, which is now owned by Disney, was never expected to be as commercially successful as it is today.
Did you know that Star Wars was not the original name for the first film? The original name for the first film was going to be Adventures of Luke Skywalker.
FACT OF THE DAY: During the filming of The Grinch (released in 2000), Jim Carrey was trained by the CIA. Yes, that is an actual fact.
While making this movie, Carrey was put through “torture-endurance training” to help him go through the make-up process, which could take up to 8 hours to complete.
Side Note: Carrey also credited the soothing sounds of The Bee Gees as a big help during this make-up ordeal.
FACT OF THE DAY: The late great Andre the Giant played the beloved Fezzik character in the 1987 film adaptation of The Princess Bride. However, did you know that this film was almost made back in the 70s?
If the film would have been made in the 70s, it would not have been Andre playing this role. Who was being considered to play the role of Fezzik? A very young and not yet known, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
FACT OF THE DAY: Eye of the Tiger, the theme song to Rocky III movie continues to be a popular song to this day. Thirty six years after the film was released the song is still played at various sporting events.
Sylvester Stallone, writer, director, and star of the film contacted the band Survivor to come up with a theme song after he was not able to get the rights to the one he originally wanted.
What was Stallone’s first choice of music for Rocky III? It was the classic Queen song, Another One Bites the Dust.
